Knell of Erebus (brass band)

Knell of Erebus takes its title from Mount Erebus, the active volcano that pierces the icy heart of Antarctica. In Greek mythology, it is the personification of darkness. The “knell” here is not a death knell, but a tolling bell that announces the end of an era – the era of darkness. The fanfare opens with a dark and brooding soundscape, conjuring the vastness and coldness of the Antarctic night. Yet,there is a sense of anticipation within the darkness, a hint of the fiery power that lies dormant beneath the ice. As the music unfolds, the brass erupts with a fanfare that is both powerful and triumphant. The darkness is not vanquished with brute force, but with a relentless, building energy that suggests the inevitable end of the night, and the triumph of good.
