Description
“Solfege Siesta” is a playful and lyrical exploration of color, motion, and imagination for solo 4-mallet marimba. Beginning in the warm familiarity of A major (easier for mallets than us brass players), the work gradually drifts through a series of unexpected tonal landscapes, each one unfolding naturally like passing thoughts during a quiet afternoon daydream. The flowing andante tempo allows the instrument’s resonance to sing, highlighting both the expressive and percussive qualities of the marimba.
The central B section slows and softens the energy of the piece, creating a suspended atmosphere that contrasts the gentle momentum of the opening material. Here, fragments of melody and harmony seem to wander freely before slowly finding their way back home. The music embraces subtle nuance and delicate phrasing, inviting the performer to shape each line with sensitivity and clarity.
As the opening material returns, “Solfege Siesta” awakens with renewed vitality. Wide intervallic leaps and sparkling gestures bring a sense of excitement and athleticism to the recapitulation, offering a dramatic contrast to the reflective middle section. Balancing charm, humor, and expressive freedom, the work celebrates the marimba’s ability to move effortlessly between lyricism and virtuosity.
