Description

The Story Behind the Music

The Standhope Ultra Challenge has been a huge part of my life.

I directed the race for more than a decade. What started as a relatively small mountain ultramarathon grew into something much larger: a community, a massive logistical undertaking, and a place where people came to discover what they were capable of.

Then, this past July, I finished the race as a runner.

After years of directing other people through the course, I finally experienced the 100 miles from the other side of the starting line. The tree that feels the axe.

The Fifth Symphony will draw from that entire history: not just the race itself, but the landscape, the people, the years of work, the physical and significant emotional cost of endurance; and the strange beauty of spending an enormous amount of time moving through the mountains toward a finish line. This symphony will be my musical record of that experience.
