Description

For Clarinet and Piano, Grade 2

“Baker Bear Bounce” is a playful musical adventure inspired by the black bears that roam the forests surrounding Baker City, Oregon. While bears are often thought of as slow and lumbering, anyone who has seen one bound across a hillside knows just how agile and energetic they can be. This spirited work captures that surprising mix of strength, curiosity, and lighthearted mischief through bright melodies, buoyant rhythms, and plenty of musical personality. Written for the developing clarinetist, the solo provides opportunities to build confidence in articulation, phrasing, and rhythmic precision without sacrificing musical expression. The opening and closing sections dance along in a lively Allegro at 120 beats per minute, while the middle section smoothly shifts into 6/8, introducing compound meter in a way that feels natural and approachable before returning to the familiar 4/4 pulse for the final statement of the opening theme. Whether imagined as a young bear bounding through a mountain meadow or simply enjoyed as an energetic concert work, “Baker Bear Bounce” is meant to bring a smile to performers and audiences alike.
