Description
“Burnt River Bighorn Sheep” takes its inspiration from one of eastern Oregon’s most resilient animals. Living among the steep canyons and rocky cliffs of the Burnt River country, bighorn sheep possess an incredible combination of strength, balance, and determination. Watching these remarkable animals navigate terrain that seems impossible reminds us why they have become a symbol of perseverance in the rugged landscapes of the American West.
The music is driving and rhythmic from beginning to end, capturing the confidence and sure-footed movement of a bighorn ram as it climbs effortlessly through its rocky home. Throughout the work, listeners may also hear the unmistakable clash of massive horns as two rams battle for dominance, with bold rhythmic figures and accented passages bringing these dramatic encounters to life.
Written as a Grade 1 solo, “Burnt River Bighorn Sheep” introduces young bassoonists to energetic articulation, rhythmic precision, and expressive playing while remaining approachable for developing musicians.
It is a celebration of courage, endurance, and the wild spirit that continues to thrive in the canyons of eastern Oregon.
