Description

For Bassoon and Piano, Grade 4

“Pine Creek Wapiti” paints a musical portrait of one of the Elkhorn Mountains’ most iconic residents. Flowing from the eastern slopes of the range, Pine Creek provides quiet refuge for wildlife, and it is here that the imagination meets a solitary bull wapiti (elk). The opening unfolds with a broad, noble melody, capturing the quiet confidence, strength, and watchf

ul presence of the animal as it surveys its surroundings. The peaceful moment does not last. A sudden burst of energy sends the bull bounding through the timber, and the music responds with spirited rhythms and driving momentum as the bassoon races through the forest. After the excitement subsides, the opening material returns, reminding us that even the wilderness has moments of stillness and reflection. In the closing measures, the elk once again disappears into the trees, vanishing deeper into the forest until only the memory of the encounter remains. Written for bassoon and piano, “Pine Creek Wapiti” is a Grade 4 work that challenges performers to balance lyrical expression with athletic technical playing while capturing the rugged beauty and untamed spirit of Oregon’s Elkhorn Mountains.
