“Cool Common Camas” is a cheerful musical tribute to one of the Northwest’s most dazzling springtime wildflowers. Every year, the humble common camas bursts onto the scene, covering meadows with brilliant shades of purple-blue as if nature decided the landscape needed a fresh coat of paint. These hardy perennials thrive in sunny, moisture-rich meadows before happily settling in for the dry summer months. Along the way, they become a favorite destination for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds—essentially hosting one of the liveliest garden parties in the neighborhood. As an added bonus, their bulbs even release a sweet molasses aroma when boiled, proving that this flower has more personality than first meets the eye.
That playful spirit is at the heart of this work for marimba, shaker, and piano. Bright rhythms bounce from one instrument to another as if pollinators are darting from blossom to blossom with an important schedule to keep. The marimba sings with colorful melodies while the shaker adds a little extra sparkle, like a gentle breeze rustling through a meadow full of wildflowers. Midway through the piece, the marimba steps into the spotlight with a lively solo that invites the performer to show off a little, have some fun, and maybe imagine being the busiest bee in the field.
Above all, “Cool Common Camas” is meant to bring smiles. It celebrates the simple joy of sunshine, wildflowers, and the wonderfully busy world that exists just a few inches above a spring meadow.
