For Trombone & Piano, Grade 3
Perched high above the rugged ridges of northeastern Oregon, Rock Creek Butte offers sweeping views of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and serves as home to one of the mountain’s most agile inhabitants—the mountain goat. Sure-footed and remarkably calm, these animals navigate cliffs and rocky outcroppings with an ease that seems almost impossible. “Mountain Goats at Rock Creek Butte” imagines a quiet morning among these resilient creatures as they graze peacefully across the alpine landscape, surrounded by crisp mountain air and endless vistas.
The work opens in C minor with a broad, unhurried melody that reflects both the solitude and quiet strength of the high country. Without warning, the peaceful scene is shattered as a mountain lion appears, launching a frantic chase. The music accelerates into a driving cut-time section filled with urgency, sharp rhythmic figures, and rapid exchanges between the trombone and piano as the goats scramble across steep cliffs in a daring escape. As danger fades into the distance, the opening melody returns transformed in B-flat minor—familiar, yet forever changed by the encounter. The mountain remains wild, beautiful, and unpredictable, reminding us that survival in nature often depends on equal measures of courage, instinct, and resilience.
