Description
Few animals capture the imagination of the American West quite like the coyote. Clever, energetic, and endlessly unpredictable, it seems equally at home slipping quietly through the sagebrush or bursting into a full-speed chase across open country. “Coyote Cannonball” imagines one of those unforgettable moments when curiosity gives way to pure, joyful chaos.
Written as a Grade 4 solo for euphonium and piano, the work is a whirlwind of playful rhythms, nimble technical passages, and quick changes in character. Though firmly rooted in the bright sonority of C major, the music takes several unexpected harmonic detours, drawing subtle inspiration from the colorful chord progressions of The Beatles and the warm, luminous writing of John Rutter. These surprises give the piece an unmistakable sense of whimsy while allowing the euphonium to sing with both brilliance and lyricism.
From the opening measures to its exhilarating finish, “Coyote Cannonball” celebrates speed, wit, and a healthy dose of mischief. It challenges the soloist to combine technical precision with expressive flair, capturing the boundless personality of one of the West’s most iconic tricksters.
