“Trumpeter Swan Sojourn” paints a musical portrait of one of North America’s most graceful birds as it journeys across quiet wetlands and open skies. The solo begins with a warm, lyrical melody in B-flat major, inviting listeners into a peaceful landscape where the swans drift effortlessly across calm waters. The flowing melody captures their quiet elegance and unhurried confidence.
Midway through the piece, the music blossoms into E-flat major as the swans prepare for flight. The piano’s energetic accompaniment suggests beating wings and gathering momentum before the birds finally lift into the air. A playful musical surprise follows: the piano introduces a flowing 9/8 pattern while the euphonium continues in 3/4, creating the sensation of soaring, gliding, and circling high above the landscape without ever losing the music’s gentle character.
