Gowen Point March was written for the composer’s Army band and draws inspiration from the great American march tradition, particularly the iconic style of John Philip Sousa. Bright, confident, and purpose-driven, the work celebrates the ceremonial energy and craftsmanship that define the military band repertoire.

Throughout the march, the horn section is given a prominent role, carrying several memorable and lyrical melodies that provide both warmth and forward momentum. At the trio, the music takes an unexpected and expressive turn with a modulation into the parallel minor, offering a moment of contrast and depth before returning to the march’s triumphant character. The percussion writing is carefully crafted and colorful, featuring traditional march textures alongside characterful touches such as whistle and wood block.

In true grand march fashion, the final strain builds to a bold grandioso, where the trombones are invited to stand and project the full power of the ensemble. Gowen Point March was honored with selection on the 2022 American Band College Top 100 list, recognizing its strong craftsmanship and its contribution to the modern concert march repertoire.
