Program Notes

Wallowa Creek Winterscape is inspired by a quiet winter hike along Wallowa Creek in the Eagle Cap Wilderness of eastern Oregon. Beneath clear blue skies and surrounded by snow-covered peaks, the landscape feels both expansive and intimate. This sense of crisp air and open space is portrayed through shimmering metallic percussion and bright figures in the upper woodwinds, setting the scene for a serene yet vibrant winter day.

At the heart of the work is a warm, lyrical main theme introduced by the euphonium, trombones, and tuba (with cross-cued parts to ensure accessibility for smaller or developing ensembles). This theme reflects the steady beauty of the wilderness and the grounding presence of the trail itself. A sudden, playful fast section follows, inspired by my children’s spontaneous energy during the hike, with jingle bells adding a light, festive character to the music.

The journey culminates in a bold musical portrayal of Chief Joseph Mountain (9,616’), whose massive presence dominates the Wallowa Mountains. Trumpets and trombones rise powerfully to depict the mountain’s grandeur, leading to a broad and exciting conclusion. Wallowa Creek Winterscape celebrates both the majesty of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and the personal joy found in sharing these wild places together. I love the mountains.
