Description
“The Wallowa Wonderscape” invites listeners to the breathtaking shores of Wallowa Lake in northeastern Oregon, where towering peaks of the Eagle Cap Wilderness rise dramatically above one of the Pacific Northwest’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. Inspired by a radiant day beneath these mountains, the work seeks to capture both the grandeur of the natural world and the quiet sense of wonder that accompanies standing in a place far larger than oneself.
A dazzling rhythmic motif of two sixteenth notes followed by an eighth note serves as the heartbeat of the composition, weaving its way through the music in ever-changing forms. As the piece unfolds, this gesture propels the listener forward into sweeping cinematic harmonies (and a nod to Danny Elfman) and expansive melodic lines, reflecting the movement of wind across alpine waters and the ever-changing vistas surrounding Wallowa Lake.
Wonder is built into the fabric of “The Wallowa Wonderscape,”
much like the enduring beauty of the Eagle Cap Wilderness itself. Through moments of brilliance, motion, and reflection, the work celebrates the remarkable landscape of northeastern Oregon and the sense of awe it inspires in all who encounter it.
