Description

For Tuba & Piano, Grade 5

There is something deeply humbling about standing in the presence of a mountain. Long before we arrived, they were shaped by unimaginable forces. Long after we are gone, they will still stand, bearing silent witness to the choices humanity has made. “Where Mountains Remember” reflects on that perspective, inviting us to consider our brief place in an ancient landscape that has watched civilizations rise and fall.

Written in sonata form and centered in the somber key of G minor, the work begins with an unaccompanied tuba soliloquy, as though the mountains themselves have found a voice. The music explores the instrument’s remarkable range, shifting between moments of quiet introspection and powerful declarations. Throughout the work, the piano serves as both landscape and memory, supporting the tuba as it tells a story of endurance, loss, and resilience.

Though often celebrated for its strength and power, the tuba is equally capable of profound lyricism and emotional depth. “Where Mountains Remember” seeks to reveal that expressive voice while reminding us that the natural world will outlast us all. The question is not whether the mountains will remember us—but what they will remember.
