Program Notes

Standhope Peak is named for the prominent summit overlooking the course of the annual Standhope Ultra Challenge trail race. Rising above the rugged terrain of Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains, the peak offers sweeping and unforgettable views for those willing to make the climb. Reaching the summit is no small undertaking; the most accessible route begins at the Broad Mountain Trailhead and follows the Broad Mountain Trail past Baptie and Goat Lakes before ascending to the peak. Due to heavy snowfall in the region, the mountain is typically most accessible during the summer months, from July through September.

Much like the climb itself, this composition demands energy, endurance, and focus from its performers. Brilliant woodwind passages and powerful brass writing drive the musical landscape forward, while the horn section plays a particularly prominent role throughout the work. Careful attention to balance is important, especially where countermelodies accompany the opening theme. To accommodate ensembles with varied instrumentation, cues have been included in other wind parts should a full complement of oboes, bassoons, or horns not be available.

Standhope Peak was awarded first place in the National Federation of Music Clubs Armed Forces Composition Competition in 2022.

I hope you enjoy this musical journey.
